MoOD, short for Meet only Original Designs, had creativity and innovation lurking around every corner of the fair. One such encounter was with the Flemish Masters, a project combining the talents of furniture manufacturers and textile companies together in five partnerships. President of the Flemish Masters think tank, Axel Enthoven, believes that with this method of collaboration they “have found an innovative way of working together that challenges our creativity” and it promises to be a commercial success. Subscribers can see the masterful outcome of the initiative here.

MoOD network Mix

You would think that October would have been a little quieter after the frantic show rounds of September. But you would be wrong; Cersaie in Bologna brought us key information about what’s happening in ceramic tiles (our in depth review will be in the December issue of Mix magazine) and in London, cult exhibition Frieze pointed the way for the art world. Along with a fresh round of exhibitions from Padua to New York, inspiration for the designer is thick on the ground this autumn. However with heavy workloads and tighter travel budgets restraining most design professionals, this newsletter attempts to stop the gaps by providing a useful snapshot of the most important things happening this month.

Reacting to readers’ feedback is core to our mission at Global Color Research™.  Which is why our marketing department’s reader survey made for such interesting reading.  It seems we are on the right track focusing on the colour trends that are at the centre of our business, which is good news. So how can we make things even better? When asked what people would like to see more of, the answer was more information on colour and its use in design along with regional trends. This newsletter feels like the ideal arena to talk further about the micro trends we can’t always cover in the magazine and to focus on the changing choices in colour that are happening at an ever more breakneck speed. And to address the very pertinent issue of regional variations in colour choices, we have asked our new colour expert in America, Mark Woodman, to contribute a ‘letter’, focusing on what is happening in the US.

Higher, faster, better – the fight for the Olympic hundredth seconds in Beijing is over. Instead, long lasting is the worldwide battle for market shares. And our industry too has not been spared by the virus of greedy megalomania. Mergers generating ever larger company units are increasingly common, while unavoidable bankruptcies are the consequences. These are the visible signs of market saturation, but it also stands for society supersaturation. The ‘well-known’and the ‘approved’ are ignored, while people constantly seek out a ‘mind-blowing kick’. The ‘kick’ greed results in the offer of superficial thrills with opulence overladen with pomp and splendour. Showing off and pornography make the consumer insecure.
